PRESS RELEASE

Dragatsaniou str. Athens: VIDEO-SHOW

A group of contemporary visual artists has chosen to work with spaces which are not already marked as ‘’artistic’’ but are , rather , areas where intense everyday life activities commerce, and city rhythms are in evidence. Dragatsaniou Street of Electric appliances fame, on Clauthmonos Square , right in the center of Athens , is one such space. Store windows and in some cases the store interiors will serve as Exhibition space.

Since this event is talking place in a public area, store employees, customers, office workers from the adjoining buildings, as well as passers by will all become, in a sense, visitors to the show. One feature of the show is that it will not alter the appearance of or interfere with the normal function of these stores-an all too familiar trait of certain cultural proceedings.

More specifically , our work is seriously investing in and investigating the status of VIDEO and ANIMATION images when these are ‘’hosted’’ by T.V sets. And , given the uniqueness of each store, ‘’hosting’’ may well shade into total identification with commercial programming to an extent that is extremely difficult to re-produce in a lab [ e.g. , an Arts center].

The artists responded enthusiastically to the idea for this show , and so did the store owners who were pleasantly surprised by it. Participating stores are: RADIOATHINA, RADIO-CORASIDIS, ELECTRONIKI ATHINON , CLUB ELECTRIC, MAGNET ELECTRIC-V. TZAROS A.E. and PANAGIOTIS SARGIOTIS .

The participating artists are : Giannis Ganas , Maurice Ganis , Tirtza Even Jason Karaindros , Mireille Lienard , Liron Lupu , Dimitris Dokatzis , Maya Bontzou-Panos Vittorakis , Jenny Marketou , Miltos Manetas , Ilias Marmaras , Jack Mensink , Ilias Papailiakis , Diego Perrone , Thodoris Rautopoulos , Constanze Ruhm , Danai Stratou-Alexandra Stratou , Uri Tzaig , Akram Zaatari , Stewart Ziff .

The VIDEO SHOW opens on October 22 , 1999 , at 7.30 p.m. , at Dragatsaniou street and will be on CONTINUOUS view , until November 13.
